Are GE XWFE and RPWFE refrigerator filters NSF certified?

Yes. GE’s XWFE and RPWFE are certified, and they are the best-documented filters in our 45-filter verification check. Both appear in IAPMO R&T’s Product Listing Directory under the certificate holder “GE Appliances, A Haier Company”, with five active NSF/ANSI files covering standards 42, 53, 372, 401 and P473. Six of the eleven GE-compatible filters in our dataset are certified for the exact model sold. The other five are not: three come from brands whose certifications cover different models, and two resisted verification under every name we could search.

The short version

  • GE XWFE and RPWFE hold five active IAPMO R&T certifications: W-9755 (NSF/ANSI 42-2022), W-9756 (NSF/ANSI 53-2021), W-9757 (NSF/ANSI 372-2020), W-9758 (NSF/ANSI 401-2022) and W-11362 (NSF P473-2016, PFOA/PFOS). The RPWFE file set adds W-9975 (CSA B483.1).
  • Neither model appears in NSF’s own certified-products database. NSF holds 257 GE-tagged rows and none of them matched; searches under General Electric or GE Appliances returned nothing at all.
  • Of the eleven GE-compatible filters we checked, six are certified for the exact model sold. Four of those six hold narrower scopes than GE’s own filters: one covers NSF/ANSI 42 only, and three hold NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, which is about the lead content of materials, not lead removal from water.
  • Six of the eleven GE-lane listings claim certifications the databases do not show for the model in the box, including the two ICEPURE models that are certified only to 372.

GE’s filter certifications live in IAPMO, under a name no retail listing prints

The reason GE’s OEM filters look uncertified on a quick search is a naming gap, not a missing certification. NSF’s drinking-water database returned no matching products for XWFE or RPWFE under four name variants: TradeName=GE, Company=General Electric, Company=GE Appliances and TradeName=GE Appliances. The 257 GE-tagged rows NSF does hold contain no refrigerator filter model we searched. The certifications exist, in IAPMO R&T, filed under “GE Appliances, A Haier Company”. GE Appliances has been part of Haier since 2016, and that corporate name is what the certificates carry.

This is the single most useful habit our study produced: search the certificate-holder’s registered company name, not the brand on the box. In our own first research pass, before we tried corporate names, GE’s OEM rows came back unresolved and the study’s OEM comparison pointed the wrong way. A clean sequential re-check under the Haier name flipped both XWFE and RPWFE to fully certified, with exact model matches. The certificate numbers above are the checkable handle: W-9755 through W-9758 and W-11362 can be pulled up directly in IAPMO’s directory, alongside the standard and the model each one covers. The five standards on GE’s listing do different jobs, and 372 is the one buyers misread

The file numbers cluster because GE certified these filters broadly, and the standards are not interchangeable. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects, chiefly chlorine taste and odour and particulate reduction. NSF/ANSI 53 is the health-effects standard and the one that includes lead reduction, along with cyst reduction and a list of other health-related contaminants. NSF/ANSI 372 covers the lead content of wetted materials: the components that touch water stay under an allowable lead threshold. It is a materials standard and says nothing about how much lead the filter removes. NSF/ANSI 401 covers emerging compounds such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products. P473 covers PFOA and PFOS reduction. RPWFE’s extra file, W-9975, is the Canadian drinking water treatment systems standard.

That distinction between 372 and 53 is where most GE-compatible listings go wrong, and it is the core of the ICEPURE finding below. Our standards comparison guide walks through which contaminants sit under which standard, and the lead question covers the 53-versus-372 confusion directly.

The XWFE listing we captured claims, verbatim, “Certified to Reduce Lead, Sulfur, and 50+ Other Impurities”. Our dataset scores that claim a match against the five certifications held, because the standard set covers lead reduction and a wide range of contaminants. One caution: the database entry records standards, not contaminant counts, so the “50+” part of the claim is not something a buyer can verify from the listing. The standard set is.

Six of the eleven GE-compatible filters we checked are certified for the exact model sold

The GE platform is the strongest lane in our 45-filter study, and it still is not clean. Two OEM filters are certified to the full range. GlacierFresh’s GF-XWF-N holds NSF/ANSI 42 only. The three ICEPURE models hold certification but at narrower scope. Five GE-lane rows fall short.

The split of the lane: two filters certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 together, one certified to 42 only, one to 42 plus 372, two to 372 alone, three from brands whose listings cover other models, and two we could not verify under any name. The store-brand row, Great Value’s GE XWFE-compatible cartridge, is the one listing in this lane with no certification traceable to any manufacturer at all — worth remembering when a GE-compatible filter is priced well below the OEM.

The ICEPURE RWF3600A and RWF1500A hold the lead-content standard, not the lead-reduction one

Both listings are titled “NSF 42, 372 Certified”. Checked under ICEPURE’s IAPMO registrant, TOP PURE USA INC, and neither claim survives intact. RWF3600A and RWF1500A each show a single active certification, WP-12587 for NSF/ANSI/CAN 372-2022. There is no NSF/ANSI 42 match for either model. So the 372 half of the claim is real and the 42 half is not: both rows are recorded as OVERSTATES in our dataset.

RWF5200A, the third ICEPURE model in the GE lane, is the clean one. IAPMO shows WP-12585 (NSF/ANSI 42-2021, active) and WP-12587 (372-2022, active) for that exact model, so its “NSF 42, 372 Certified” title matches the record.

The practical trap is that “NSF 372” reads, to most shoppers, like a lead claim. It is a lead content claim about materials. A filter certified only to 372 is making no statement about how much lead it removes from water; that is NSF/ANSI 53’s job, and none of the ICEPURE GE-lane models holds 53. How much trust to place in these three rows is a fair question, and the answer is: a lot, for this narrow finding. The three SKUs share one corporate filer, and each returned a distinct, non-overlapping certificate set, which is what a model-differentiating search should do. ICEPURE returned no matches at all in NSF’s database, so IAPMO carried the whole answer here.

GlacierFresh sells one certified GE-compatible filter and one brand-level claim that misses the model

GlacierFresh’s GF-XWF-N is certified, and its “NSF Certified” title is scored a match in our dataset. The listing sits under Ningbo Koze Purification Equipment Co. Ltd., trade name “Glacier fresh”, covering models GF-XWF and GF-XWF-N under NSF/ANSI 42 only: chlorine reduction, 0.528 gpm to 200 gallons. No 53, no 372, no 401 appears for that model.

The same brand’s GFRPWFE, sold with the title “NSF Certified with RFID Chip”, is a different story. Ningbo Koze’s NSF/ANSI 42 listing covers the GF-XWF pair and the GF-1000P family. No RPWFE or RPWF-pattern model appears anywhere in that result set. That makes the GFRPWFE title a brand-level claim projected onto a model the brand’s listing does not cover, which is the most common failure mode in our study. It is recorded as BRAND-LISTED-MODEL-ABSENT, and its IAPMO and WQA lookups were not resolved in that pass.

Crystala Filters and AQUACREST claim coverage their own listings do not include

Crystala Filters’ XWFE-compatible model is sold as “NSF/ANSI 42 Certification”. The brand itself is genuinely listed, and heavily: 44 products across three manufacturers, all NSF/ANSI 42 only. The 37 CF-series models come from Ningbo Koze, CF34/CF54/CF55 from Ningbo Pureza, and CF-081L, CF-092, CF-092X, CF-096 and CF-096X from YiHangGou Trading under the “Crystala Filters” name. None of those rows matches a model for the XWFE. The claim is real for the brand and unverified for the SKU.

AQUACREST has the same structure with a smaller listing. Only five AQUACREST models exist in NSF’s database, all NSF/ANSI 42 only: EFF-6008S1/AQF-FF08, EFF-6032S/AQF-FF32D, EFF-6038S1/AQF-FF38, AQF-FF12 and EFF-6002S/AQF-FF15. The GE-compatible AQF-MWF is not among them. Both rows are recorded as BRAND-LISTED-MODEL-ABSENT with an OVERSTATES claim delta. Walmart’s Great Value XWFE-compatible filter could not be verified, and the reason is a naming gap

The Great Value GE XWFE-compatible cartridge is one of two GE-lane rows we could not resolve in either direction (the other is Pureline’s XWF replacement, covered below). IAPMO has no Great Value listee. NSF returned no matches for the trade names Great Value, GV or the company name Walmart; a GV search surfaced nine unrelated refrigerator-filter products from Mist Filters and a manufacturer trading as “The Fairy of Water”, none of which can be tied to this SKU because the Walmart page does not expose the product’s own model or element code. WQA does carry Great Value certifications, but they belong to MAVEA LLC and cover pitcher filters, a different product category.

Private-label cartridges are typically certified, if at all, under the contract manufacturer’s corporate name, and we could not identify that manufacturer from the public listing. The honest reading of this row: unverified, not uncertified. The distinction matters, and it is the reason our 45-filter study separates a could-not-verify result from a no-listing-found result in every tally. Pureline’s XWF replacement is absent under the name it sells under

Pureline’s GE-compatible XWF is titled “NSF-42 and 372 Certified”. We could not find the brand under that name in any of the three databases. NSF returned no matches. IAPMO has no Pureline listee, and a model search on the string XWF returned only GE Appliances and unrelated Kent RO Systems. WQA does show an entity called Pureline Treatment Systems, LLC, but its listings sit under NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, tagged as chemical generator and chlorine dioxide disinfection products, and the files treat it as an unrelated chemical-generator company rather than the fridge-filter brand.

We recorded this row as COULD-NOT-VERIFY, with the claim unconfirmed. That is not the same as recording the filter as uncertified, and we do not make that claim. It means a buyer holding this cartridge has no public record to check it against, which is the finding our study is built to surface.

The “with chip” wording in GE-compatible listings is about fitment, not certification

Two aftermarket listings in our GE lane print chip language in the product title: GlacierFresh’s GFRPWFE (“with RFID Chip”) and Crystala Filters’ XWFE (“with chip”). Across all eleven GE-lane rows, chip wording appears only in aftermarket titles. No certification record we pulled lists a chip as a scoped feature, and none of the five IAPMO files behind GE’s OEM filters references one. What the chip does is simply not documented in our files, so we say nothing about it beyond its presence in those two titles. If a listing’s certification rests on chip compatibility, treat the chip and the certification as two separate questions.

Which GE refrigerator takes which filter

The GE models in our fitment index split four ways. XWFE covers the French-door and side-by-side models GFE28GYNFS, GNE27JYMFS, GSS25GSHSS, PSE25KSHSS and GSS25IYNFS, plus the two bottom-freezer models GDE21ESKSS and GDE25ESKSS, where our notes flag an early-production ambiguity with the MWFP filter. RPWFE is listed for PFE28KSKSS, and our notes on GFE28GYNFS record RPWFE as also GE-listed for that model. MWF/MWFP is listed for PSE25KYHFS, and MSWF for PSC23MSWSS. Those last two filter families sit outside our 45-filter verification set, so this page carries no certification record for them. What we could not determine

  • Certification status for three GE-lane rows is incomplete because of search-tool instability. GFRPWFE, Crystala’s XWFE and AQF-MWF were not resolved in IAPMO or WQA during the pass that handled them, because the listing search form returned unstable results; those three rows are unresolved, not proven uncertified. Pureline’s XWF and the Great Value cartridge are a different case: both were queried successfully in a later, clean sequential re-check and came back as genuine could-not-verify findings — a real naming gap in the public record, not a search-tool failure.
  • The Great Value contract manufacturer is unidentified, so the store brand’s claim cannot be confirmed or refuted from public records.
  • GE’s own MWF/MWFP and MSWF cartridges are unchecked. Only XWFE and RPWFE were tested as GE OEM rows. MSWF’s aftermarket equivalent, ICEPURE’s RWF1500A, is in our sample and covered above (certified for NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 only), but GE’s own MSWF filter carries no verification record here, and MWF/MWFP has no aftermarket data point in our sample at all.
  • We tested no filters. This page is a check of public certification records, not a laboratory performance test. Certification status also changes over time. GE row captures are dated 2026-08-07; fitment rows are dated 2026-08-09.
  • Independent lead-removal lab data remains thin. The independent testing record documents that the only substantial independent lead testing of refrigerator-style filters was a 2018 study of known counterfeits, and nothing has replaced it.
