Almost nobody. As of August 2026, exactly one substantial independent lab program has ever measured lead removal in refrigerator-style water filters bought off the open market: the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers’ 2018 study, which found that 32 of 32 counterfeit filters (100%) failed the NSF/ANSI lead-removal standard at twice their rated life. That study is eight years old, and it tested known counterfeits — not the legitimately sold generic filters most people are actually choosing between. No peer-reviewed study comparing OEM and aftermarket refrigerator filters for lead removal exists. This page is the complete inventory of what does.

The single real lead test was published in 2018 and tested fakes

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), the OEM trade association, released Fake Filters, Real Problems in May 2018, with testing funded in part by the Water Quality Research Foundation. It remains the only published lab measurement of lead removal in refrigerator-style filters.

What it found: of 32 counterfeit filters tested for lead removal, 100% failed to meet NSF/ANSI standards at 200% of rated capacity. In a separate chemical-extraction batch of 46 filters, ten separate compounds exceeded total allowable concentrations — leaching into water that entered the filters clean. No filter in the study removed live cysts to the NSF/ANSI 53 standard, even after the threshold was lowered from 99.95% to 90%.

Three caveats belong in the same breath as that number. It is eight years old, with no published replication since. Its sample was known counterfeits — filters already infringing trademarks or bearing false certification marks — not the wider market of honestly labeled compatible filters. And it was commissioned by the trade association representing the OEMs whose sales counterfeits displace. The methodology and results appear sound; the interest is still worth stating.

Consumer Reports has never lab-tested a refrigerator filter for lead

The source most buyers assume has already settled this question has not tested it.

Consumer Reports published its first-ever refrigerator water filter test in April 2026 — 29 filters across 12-plus brands, including at least one third-party model alongside each OEM line. The lab work measured flow rate and useful lifespan (gallons dispensed before output fell below 16 oz/min). It did not measure contaminant removal. The chlorine (NSF/ANSI 42), lead (53), lead-in-materials (372), pharmaceutical (401), and PFAS (P473) claims CR shows readers are drawn from each product’s existing certification paperwork, not verified in CR’s own lab.

CR’s earlier September 2018 piece on cheaper replacement filters was desk research, not lab work: CR searched marketplace listings, cross-checked certification databases, and reported “significant trouble finding brands that are certified to international quality and safety standards.” Culligan was the one aftermarket brand with any confirmable certification — and only two of three relevant certifications could be verified. No lead measurements were generated.

This is a gap, not a failing. CR tested what it set out to test and tells readers plainly to check the NSF, WQA, and IAPMO databases themselves. The point is only that the test everyone assumes exists does not.

The academic literature does not isolate refrigerator filters

Three university or peer-reviewed items touch this territory. None of them answers the question.

Tang, Lytle, Achtemeier & Tully (2023), Water Research 244:120425 — the most rigorous lead-filter review available, peer-reviewed with EPA-affiliated authors. It pooled 21 prior studies covering 1,653 filters: 1,461 faucet-mounted, 25 under-sink, 167 pitcher. Findings: 99% (1,490/1,503) of field-deployed filters met the lead benchmark, versus only 61% (91/150) under laboratory conditions, with failures concentrated where filters were pushed past certified conditions. Refrigerator filters are not a category anywhere in that breakdown — the three types reported are faucet-mounted, under-sink, and pitcher.

Stapleton (Duke) & Knappe (NC State), 2020, Environmental Science & Technology Letters — in-home sampling of 76 point-of-use filters and 13 point-of-entry systems across six North Carolina counties. The contaminant was PFAS/GenX, not lead. Refrigerator-style units were pooled into an undifferentiated “activated carbon” category with pitcher, countertop, and faucet-mount filters, which removed PFAS inconsistently — roughly 73% average reduction with very high variance, sometimes none at all. Only reverse-osmosis and two-stage under-sink systems performed consistently (94%+).

Good Housekeeping Research Institute / University of Arizona, 2012 — a university-performed, magazine-sponsored test of three OEM refrigerator filters (GE SmartWater, Kenmore, Whirlpool) plus three pitchers, spiking Tucson tap water with pharmaceuticals, hormones, and pesticides at 1.5x rated lifespan. The GE and Whirlpool filters removed all spiked contaminants through and beyond rated life. Lead was not a target contaminant, no aftermarket brand was included, and the test is now 14 years old.

Seizure counts are not test results

Counterfeit refrigerator filters are demonstrably in the US market: Customs and Border Protection seized 29,056 units in Baltimore in 2022 (GlacialPure branded, ~$439,000 MSRP if genuine) and 3,940 units at LA/Long Beach in 2023 bearing counterfeit NSF marks. Those are trademark actions. CBP does not measure lead removal. Online summaries routinely present seizure volume as though CBP had lab-tested the filters and found them failing; that finding traces back to the 2018 AHAM study, not to CBP.

Answering “do aftermarket fridge filters remove lead as well as OEM ones?” needs a study with all four. None on record has them.

Why the gap has persisted

Filter performance testing is almost entirely certification testing, which manufacturers apply and pay for through NSF, IAPMO R&T, or WQA. That model produces a pass/fail record for the models companies choose to submit, and nothing at all for models they don’t. Independent re-testing is a separate expense that nobody has an obligation to fund — the one program that did it was a $35,000 trade-association study with a scope drawn around counterfeits.

No institution owns the category. Consumer Reports tested flow rate. The EPA publishes guidance on identifying NSF/ANSI 53-certified lead filters and co-authored a filter-type-agnostic meta-analysis, but runs no fridge-filter testing program. State enforcement actions found in this pass concern door-to-door sales scams, not cartridge performance. And the independent creators who do accredited-lab filter testing have covered pitchers and countertop units, never a refrigerator filter.

Methodology and limits

This is a desk inventory, compiled by iterative web search and direct page fetches on August 9, 2026. We commissioned no lab work. An item counts as an independent test only if testing was performed by an entity other than the filter’s manufacturer or seller; certification listings, manufacturer-supplied data, and affiliate roundups that republish NSF paperwork as “lab tested” are excluded.

Stated plainly: absence of evidence here is absence in this research pass. Several primary sources — the AHAM report PDF, two university pages, one CBP release — returned 403 errors or failed text extraction, and were triangulated from search indexing rather than read directly. Certification bodies describe operating surveillance audits, retesting, and de-listing programs, but no named, dated refrigerator-filter enforcement action was locatable in public sources. Unpublished proprietary testing, non-English literature, and paywalled trade research may exist beyond what a public search reaches.

What a buyer can actually rely on today

Nobody can currently tell you whether a given aftermarket refrigerator filter removes lead as well as the OEM filter it replaces, how either performs at the end of its rated life in a real home, or whether today’s compatible-filter market resembles the counterfeit sample AHAM tested in 2018. Any page claiming otherwise is reselling certification paperwork.

What is checkable, in under a minute:

  1. Verify the exact model number, not the brand, in the public certification databases — NSF (info.nsf.org), IAPMO R&T (pld.iapmo.org), and WQA (find.wqa.org). Consumer Reports gives its own readers the same instruction.
  2. Know how often that check fails. In our companion study, only 15 of 45 best-selling filters (33%) could be confirmed certified for the exact model sold — see what percentage of fridge filters sold online are counterfeit or uncertified.
  3. For lead specifically, look for NSF/ANSI 53 certification naming lead reduction, held for your model by a named certifier — not a listing that merely “meets NSF standards.” Our fitment index shows the verification status of every compatible filter for 50 popular refrigerator models.
  4. Replace on schedule. The one consistent signal across the peer-reviewed record is that lead-filter failures cluster when filters run past their certified capacity.
